Planting and Blooming

Today, I had to dress up at work for an event the school is hosting this evening. I didn't realize until my lunch break today that I was wearing the dress that matched my "interview blazer" during my recruiting season at Kelley.

In October of 2016, I was in Texas interviewing for a job at Macy's. To be honest, I knew the job wasn't going to be for me, but decided long before that I would never turn down an interview. I spent the two days networking and meeting people from all over the country who had dreams of working in retail. I, on the other hand, had zero intention of ever doing that.

As the other candidates and I waited for our individual interviews, we asked the recruiters for advice. Some talked about taking risks, but one talked about the unknown. She mentioned the phrase "bloom where you are planted". On my plane ride home, I doodled that phrase.

At the time, I thought I had an idea of where I would be planted. I thought I would be in Indianapolis working for a logistics company for several years. When the company culture ended up suffocating me instead of allowing me to flourish, I left without notice.

I moved home, started working multiple part-time jobs and felt a little hopeless.

You see, to me success was going off and making a living. It was being on my own and maybe starting a family. Being successful meant going from sales executive to CEO of the same company.

What it didn't mean was quitting my job, moving home and being a waitress again.

But today, things have changed. Success isn't having something, but being something. It isn't about having the job that everyone wants, but being more confident than those around you. It is not about having the dream job, but about being happy. More or less, it is not about the titles, but the mindset. I am blooming where I am planted. Somehow, I am back in BLOOMINGton, and growing here.

No matter where you are or what you do, bring your best. Regardless of if life is going to plan, bloom where you are NOW. Do not wait to be your best self. You may not be where you thought you would be, but you are ALWAYS where you are meant to be.
