Wrong Door
If you know anything about me, I am a planner. I spend a great deal of time talking about my future, my goals and the things that I want to do versus the things that I have accomplished.
Lately, that has not paid off. In fact, it has left me pretty embarrassed. The opportunities I was excited about have disappeared. The things I have planned are not happening, at least for now.
Tonight, I had a bit of an epiphany. There are so many things that I have control over in my life. I can choose what I do on a day-to-day basis. I can decide what is for dinner. I can pick out my outfits and do my hair in different ways.
But I get so caught up in the things that are in the hands of others. Do people accept me? Do people find me annoying? Applying for jobs, programs, internships, externships, etc. and I have zero control of any of it.
Ready for some truth? If the door closes, it was not your door. There are other doors that are practically wide open, waiting for you to sprint through them. Stop pounding on the door that is slamming in your face. Honestly, you are probably in the way of someone else getting that opportunity, and you are missing out on your own life.
In one of my favorite Oprah columns, she talks about the future. When you do not know what to do, what do you do? You make the next right move. You do not have to have it all figured out, but what is something that will make you better now.
Luckily, I am finding my doors and not upset about the doors that have been shut for me.
